Passion for hiking in the Northwest
I love hiking almost anywhere, but especially in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve got a bunch of favorite trails within half an hour or so of Seattle, and within 90 minutes of Seattle. Farther afield, Hurricane Ridge and Mt. Rainier are my total favorites - but of course those require much more travel. I’ve made day trips to both, but with gas so high now..and who wants to drive that much on a beautiful day? BTW, St. Helens rocks. I want to hike the rim and down into the crater. Maybe I missed my chance - it’s been heating up for the past few years. Anyone done that? Send your report.
Those of you who are Puget Sounders, do you have favorite trails? Which ones do you return to, and why? (proximity, view, easy trails, etc.) I’d like to hear your comments. Do you hike alone or with friends, with a club? Which outdoors clubs do you recommend, and why?

I agree that hiking in the Northwest is a great outing, especially with a friend. I’ve done several hikes with my friend, Art. It’s a sociable, healthy, inexpensive way to spend a few hours. I recommend it to all. Right now I live in Costa Rica and “hike” every day to school, where my wife, Alicia, and I work. Soon we’ll be in sunny Mexico. I invite my friend, Art, to that country and we’ll do some hiking there.
